Who Should Pay For the Wedding?

Traditionally the bride’s parents would be in charge of a bigger portion of the wedding expenses such as the ceremony and reception.

Though nowadays, who pays for what depends on everyone's financial situation, personal relationships, and the willingness to help and participate by each party. These days, there aren't any let's say, “set of rules” in regards to financial responsibility and basically people contribute with what they can.

One factor that could be a major deal breaker; If any of the parents are taking care of most of the expenses, often times they are going to want to be involved in the decision making process.... which some couples won’t be too happy about!

They would probably want to invite aunt “x” or friend “y” or relatives that you barely remember or that don’t even know! That's when you say, "but this is my wedding!"

Always keep in mind that this is a sensitive topic and try to steer clear of misunderstandings. Always establish concise details from the beginning, from who is going to pay for what; to what level of “voice” each person is going to have in the decision making process, and things like this.

If you and your fiancé are going to pay for most of the wedding but are willing to accept some support from your parents, then a good way to involve them is by advising them on what they can help with.

For example, you can tell them that you’d appreciate if they can take care of the photographer or the videographer for instance. This creates a healthy disconnect from the sense of "paying for the wedding," to contributing towards vendors.

It will less likely allow them to feel they have “authority” to be involved with decisions.

The main key is to have excellent communication from the start so everyone is on the same page and at the end everyone will be a lot happier!
